FAR FROM HOME

A Chronicle of the Irish Undocumented in the United States
Online Photographic Exhibition
Exhibition Shown in New York & Ireland

Armed with only mobile phones and email addresses, a group of undocumented Irish immigrants has created the biggest Irish American organisation in the United States. The Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform includes familes such as Denis, Julie, Lily and Daniel (right). Lily and Daniel are US citizens but their parents are undocumented.

Their mum, Julie, says; "We just want Daniel and Lily to be able to travel and see their grandparents and aunts and uncles in Ireland. But they can't travel because we can't go with them. We're hoping that something happens because we really want to stay in America; it's where our children were born and it's the only home they know."

Drogheda photographer Sean McPhail has spent the past year documenting the ILIR's progress. He has created a unique chronicle of these 21st century Irish immigrants who are trapped between two worlds, a forgotten generation whose legal status in the USA is now part of a major debate.

Jim Dwyer from The New York Times, said; "This is an important exhibit which shows the extraordinary story of the undocumented Irish in America."

McPhail is shown at the exhibition launch in New York (above) with ILIR chairman (and fellow Droghedean) Niall O'Dowd, former New York Consul General Tim O'Connor and Pauline Turley, the Director of the Irish Arts Center in New York where the exhibition was launched in December 2006.
